Switzerland imports around three quarters of its energy. Crude oil and natural gas consumed in Switzerland come entirely from abroad. These fossil fuels are not infinitely available and heavily burden the climate. In order to reduce dependency on foreign countries and the environmental impact, the Federal Council and Parliament want to reduce the consumption of oil and gas. At the same time, more energy is to be produced in Switzerland.
In favour
The draft makes the population and economy less dependent on oil and gas imports. It strengthens climate protection, without bans and without new taxes. Those who invest in climate-friendly heating systems and innovative technology receive financial support.
Against
The referendum committee warns of a massive increase in electricity demand and skyrocketing electricity prices. The conversion of the energy supply away from heating oil, gas, diesel and petrol to electricity is unrealistic. The procedure is haphazard, exacerbates the power shortage, spoils the environment and endangers the security of supply.
